New 300Mbit sopimus starts today, but speed didn't change yet

I took the offer to change my subscription from 50Mbit to 300Mbit. I got a confirmation that the change happens today at 00.01. When I checked it in the morning the speed was still the same and never went over the 50Mbit line. I tested it with my E5785 hotspot which I restarted with and without PIN activation, 2.4 and 5GHz band and so on. I even cancelled my bank payment (eräpäivä tomorrow) and payed it via OmaElisa app because I read that an open payment could restrict the activation of a new subscription, which IMHO is not okay. There should be only such punishment when the eräpäivä is exceeded... But nothing changed. It seems only the higher price was changed to the announced time, but not the faster connection. Can someone of Elisa please check what the situation of my connection is?

Hello there. Welcome to the 4G world.

You just bought into idea that 300 Mbps is fastest 4G there is.

It may work indeed somewhere, on some device to 300 Mbps, but usually because connection is shared between the Elisa mast in your area, you will not get MAXIMUM speed. You were payng for 5 Mbps in 50 Mbps 4G and you pay for 5 Mbps in 300 Mbps. But don’t be mad, at least you get promise of 10 Mbps, if you run to a shop to buy NEW 5G ROUTER which is under €999. Is it worth it, of course not. You just bought yourself into lies of big numbers on sale.

If you run for 5G router, don’t run fast, check first if you are 1% of luckiest people to live in 5G area. Then, just then you may get a little bit faster speed, until it has more users on 5G too.

This is why I pay only for 1 Mb/s under €7 and get what I pay 100%.

Sorry to hear that you didn’t get the anticipated speed out of your mobile internet service.

However, be aware that both 50 and 300 Mbit/s services have obtainable speeds starting at 5 Mbit/s. In the evenings it is practically impossible to achieve 300 Mbit/s speed with a mobile connection. The only time you might reach the advertised top speeds is around three and six o’clock in the night.

Your modem also caps at 300 Mbit/s. Due to congestion in the mobile network, it is generally a good idea to always use a faster modem than your subscription is.

Petteri Järvinen recently measured mobile data speed around the clock. Even if you don’t read Finnish, the charts will pretty much talk for themselves. 4G-data sopii yökukkujille

because I read that an open payment could restrict the activation of a new subscription, which IMHO is not okay.

Do you have a source for this? I have not heard Elisa doing anything like this.

However, I have an idea where this might have originated from. Dna do restrict changes to your services in the situation of an open complaint, a bad business practice still.

I am aware that I cannot always get the 300Mbit. But like I before went to the 50Mbit limit I would like to see the numbers going up at least towards 100Mbit. If I now pay more for the same connection I will not be happy. If I get an offer I expect they know what I can get as maximum speed so I expect to get sometimes values above 200Mbit. Even if the average speed would be below 50Mbit. My problem now is that I have not seen a higher number yet that would prove that the new subscription is working...

Could you take your sim and check it in another modem, prefereably one with Ethernet ports, or even a known fast phone? As E5785 is a WiFi only modem, there is also the possibility of the local WiFi being a bottleneck.

It is natural to expect that you get higher speeds with 300 Mbit/s subscription than 50 Mbit/s subscription. Unfortunately that is not the case allways. In both subscriptions the speed range starts from 5 Mbit/s. It is very unusual to get maximum or even half of it.

Only thing which is sure is that 300 Mbit/s subscription is more expensive. I recommend everybody to test speeds with prepaid subscriptions from all operators before buying monthly paid subscription.

I found the source for my statement:

https://elisa.fi/asiakaspalvelu/aihe/english/ohje/disruptions-in-connections_en/

below the header 'Troubleshooting'

But when reading it again I noticed that I misinterpreted it. My bad. Sorry.

Unpaid in OmaElisa only means that Elisa didn't receive the money and not that it is overdue in which case they could of course cap the connection...

@irritus Good suggestions.

Currently the speed is around 20Mbit so I will test it early tomorrow morning when I usually reach the max. But I will test the hotspot in my laptop (if it works). Then the WiFi is not in the loop. My sim card is so crappy (cut by myself...) that I will not get it in my phone.. and in the router is also always a hassle with the plastic adapter.. but thanks for the advice.

Few things to do and consider:

  1. https://elisa.fi/kuuluvuus/ check here with you home address what speed coverage it will tell you and let us know (e.g. do you get 300M 3 stars and 600M two stars?)
  2. Your signal strength and quality might not be good enough inside your home which will prevent you getting better speeds, login to Huawei management console with your web browser and try to find values such as RSRP, RSRQ and SINR - let us know these values
  3. You might get also your signal values with web browser address: http://192.168.100.1/api/device/signal (change the end of the ip address if needed) and let us know the values, if this works
  4. This Huawei device is 2CA so it can use two bands at the same time (for example 1800MHz+800MHz or 1800MHz+2600MHz) - it means that theoretically you could get with that 300Mbit/s - in real life speeds over 200Mbit/s are almost impossible to achieve with this device, you would need better device for better speeds
  5. Heavy traffic combined with bad signal quality won’t give you better speeds, no matter how fast is your SIM subscription - try speedtest early morning after 7am
  6. Make sure you use only 5GHz WIFI, 2.4GHz will prevent you getting better speeds
  7. Tell us download and upload speed test results in different times of day - try also in terrace or balcony outside whether you can get better speeds there

Hi @Mamu12 Could you please put your customer number to your profile (asiakasnumero), so we could check your home address and the network more closely :)

Thanks :) I checked your subscription and everything seemed to be alright over there :) I recommend doing the morning check and if there’s still no change in speed, we can try to do something to your subscription from here if it would “freshen” it up :)

May it be just bad modem… They have very bad Wifi connections and speeds in these saippuamokkula (Wifi accu battery mokkula). It is usually up to 65 Mbps only. No matter how they say it, Wifi is the restriction in these little mokkula devices, I mean just go shopping… get better one. Better mobile modems are widely available, start looking now or never!

We use Huawei B525 on Elisa 4G+-network 300 Mbps with 50 Mbps €9,90 mobiililaajakaista. It is all the time 40-50 Mbps and over Ethernet 50 Mbps almost every second. We are so pleased.

You’ll never get anything like that on saippuamokkula.

I have currently 46M down 41M up and 19ms ping.

The fastest download speed I saw was one morning with 56Mbps with my old B593 router. Since then I know, that the supscription was updated…

I now already changed my subscription to 100M to save some money (3.90 for the change though) 50M seems to be not possible to order… Also I really would have liked to get VDSL because the main problem I always had was that the internet was gone altogether. Very annoying when streaming something from YleAreena or such…

Is it possible that the 4G+ (the plus part) is not working where I am?

According to the map I have 300M 3 stars and 600M 2 stars...

Hello.

You need a better router like Huawei B525 or B725 to enjoy these 4G+ speeds at the fullest.

I have B525 DNA Kotiboksi in Elisa 50M 4G and on 4G+ area it is all the time 50 Mbps.

I can’t even believe myself how fast it works compared to DNA B315 kotiboksi.

It was so worth to update after updating 4G provider from DNA to Elisa network.
