5G+ 600M not even close to the theoretical maximum speeds

Hello!

I’m using an Elisa netti 5G+ 600M subscription via a physical SIM card in an ISP-provided ZTE MC 888 Pro device running the firmware MC888_Pro_Elisa1_B13 in bridge mode, having configured the network as 5G SA locking the bands below:

I can’t quite coax a throughput above ~300M/30M out of this setup, and this was pretty much the case when running with the default settings OOTB, using this unit as a router and access point. Moving it around hadn’t seemed to help either. (The actual router was also used elsewhere so it is known to be capable enough to handle this and more.) As far as I know, 600/50 should be achievable. (The coverage map states I should be getting 600M over 5G on the 700/1500MHz bands.) Is what I’m seeing the result of an erratic throttle on the subscription, a problem with reception or something else, what do you think?

Thanks,

T.

P.S.: The above status page reports a SINR of about 15dB for the SCC under actual load.

How far are you from the cell tower?

And if you disable 5G SA and put it to NSA mode, what kind of speeds are you getting then?

Keep in mind that with mobile internet you won’t always get the maximum advertised speeds that the subscription or coverage map promises. The minumum promised speed on your subscription is 10 Mbit/s, so the 300 Mbit/s speeds are more than they promise.

Thanks for chiming in! I get the same throughput in NSA mode, albeit signal quality appears better. You’re also right, I know that the minimum is 10Mbps and 600 is a theoretical maximum, but in 3 months’ time I haven’t seen it go above 300. To be clear: I’m not complaining about not getting a constant 600, rather wonder whether this is an unwarranted cap at 300. I’m about 900 metres out from the tower.

Being 900 metres from the tower and indoors, those speeds seem normal.

If you have a 5G-capable phone, you could run some speed tests, both indoors and outdoors. You can also try getting closer to the tower (around ~100 metres) to see whether it’s actually able to deliver around 600 Mbit/s.

If you want the best possible performance, you’ll need an outdoor router like this one:

It’s more expensive than an indoor router and requires outdoor installation, but it will give you significantly better speeds and overall performance.

Solid advice, thank you. The local network segment could be congested from what I could gather - a phone doesn’t seem to perform better at the same spot either. I have yet to go closer to the tower to see if that might change this. I’ve been contemplating an outdoor router myself, but if the service in the area isn’t up to it, I’m afraid that’d be a waste of money.
