Hi, I purchased a Elisa Netti 5G+ 300M connection today which I am told is a 5G SA (Standalone) connection however when I place the SIM in my router (Teltonika RUTX50) it appears as NSA (Non Standalone) and there is no 5G only option.

With this new connection the router has started prompting that the connection MTU should be 1280 or 1500 - I don’t know what this means exactly.

I’m wondering either the Elisa Netti 5G+ 300M connection is not actually SA. SA is not supported in my location or perhaps an external antenna is required. Any advice appreciated.

Oliko tästä hyötyä?

EDIT: I was able to configure the Teltonika RUTX50 to use 5G SA through the manual connection settings but there is still no 5G only option in the connection settings. So it’s a router issue so I will have to contact Teltonika support.

Elisa 5G SA works in specific devices at the moment. You can find the list from the info site for 5G SA. The list contains phones and mobile routers. More devices are steadily added to the list, but we can’t promise that one particular device would be added in the future.

Thank you @Anspandeemus I am using the https://yrityksille.elisa.fi/teltonika-rutx50-teollinen-5g-reititin which I purchased myself as a private customer from another store a couple of years ago. So it’s technically supported by Elisa I guess. It receives regular sofware and firmware updates and is very configurable and has good tech support so it’s been good so far.

I have the connection running now as 5G SA on the RUTX50 with the 300/50 speeds as per the connection specs, it took me some router admin console tweaking to get it running but it’s working now at least. And I got some additional settings to apply from the manufacturer so I’ll be testing things in the coming days.

By the way, a question you can maybe answer. When I visited an Elisa store last Saturday to pick up a 5G SA SIM I was told that for example that the 5G SA SIM only plans like 300/600/1000 mbps all have a max upload speed of 50 mbps, is this so? The staff in the store didn’t seem to know why and I couldn’t find an exact reference to that specification on the 5G+ product pages. I only ask since my previous 5G NSA plan from another ISP was 400/100 so I was just wondering about the logic. Of course the product specs can change over time etc but just wondered about the setups as they are right now.

The info site tells the supported devices, which are Huawei 5G CPE H155, ZTE MC888 Pro & Zyxel NR5103. But it may still work with other devices too. 😊
Speed range that we can guarantee on upload is 3-50Mbps.

Thanks @Jaakop. Would you mind clarifying something as a work colleague told me about a 1000 mbps XXL 5G product which is 1000 mbps download/upload.

If I understand things correctly the 5G+ products are the SIM only options which feature for example 300/600/1000 mbps down and 3-50Mbps as you indicated.

The XXL 5G products with 1000 mbps download/upload require the consumer to also purchase a Huawei/ZTE/Zyxel external antenna and internal router (that is also a mesh WiFi device) have I got the basic idea correct?

this is just plain misinformation. elisa has zero mobile plan where upload is 1000 Mbit/s. highest upload is 100 Mbit/s.

https://static.elisa.com/v2/image/2tqybbhjs47b/5LMtwsrS8wFfbaD14gUMyY/Palvelukuvaus-Elisa-Mobiililaajakaista.pdf

in most 5g plans, upload is usually 50 Mbit/s. but 75, 100 Mbit/s are possible, mostly on business plans.

i have teltonika TRB500, so thing are not same. but i have 5g only option and i can also select NSA and SA. but i cannot select 4g/5g mixed, which i think is bad. i haven’t test elisa sim card on TRB500.

this is something i cannot give final answer. but 1280 sound too low. 1500 is used in ethernet connections and in most other cases. in wifi it might be different and is usually higher.

Many thanks @lasselusse for the info. Yes I think my work colleague may have been referring to a fiber optic connection or something or otherwise mixing things up.

I’ve been able to get the RUTX50 to connect using SA but I have not seen the 5G only option yet.

5G SA-mode does not use 4G network at all. So it’s the same thing as “5G only” ?

Yes that’s a good point, since it’s now connecting only to 5G I guess it’s technically the same thing.

Well, not exactly.

If you have options for preferred network type 3G/4G/5G auto and 5G mode 5G SA, the router will use 5G SA as long as it is connected to the 5G network.

However, should 5G signal go off-air, or it is weak, the router will revert using 4G or 3G¹. Of course, this will become evident by looking the status screen’s network type indication.

¹ in Finland only Ahvenanmaa region. There is no longer 3G service operating in mainland Finland.

1500 bytes is the standard Ethernet packet size. Usually you can use this default setting, as most other communications mediums try to cater for Ethernet’s 1500 bytes.

1500 bytes may not be optimal for the underlaying infrastructure, though.

If you are sure that your connection will go through an oldfashioned ATM style network, you may tweak MTU down to match your packets to be an integer multiple of ATM packets.

While ATM was relevant in the ADSL days, I don’t know if any of this relevant today with 5G.

1500 bytes MTU is fine for internet connections. Jumbo frames are typically used only for local networking.

@lasselusse  in reference to your comment below which was interesting since I don’t have 5G only option but I do have mixed mode available

i have teltonika TRB500, so thing are not same. but i have 5g only option and i can also select NSA and SA. but i cannot select 4g/5g mixed, which i think is bad. i haven’t test elisa sim card on TRB500.

I asked Teltonika and the reply was as follows. It seems to indicate that 5G only removes the option for NSA vs NSA which you indicate you still have so I’m not sure, but anyway this was the reply.

Most possibly RUTOS version will be quite old, as previously this 5G only was available, but it was removed as it confuses users - when 5G only was selected, only SA mode could work, but some users didn’t know that and expect 5G NSA mode which uses 4G too. That’s why 5G only was removed and 5G network mode selection was introduced.

i need to correct earlier information.

teltonika TRB500 does not have 5g only option. it has following options,

network type
  5g/4g/3g auto
  4g/3g auto
  4g only
  3g only
5g mode
  auto
  NSA
  SA

in my view there should be 5g only option and also 5g/4g mixed mode without 3g.

as lke @irritus told. 5g only is not same SA only. 5g only mode forces SA mode. but SA mode may not force 5g, it may still go other network technologies.

@lasselusse ah ok, so it’s the same as appears in the RUTX50 then. And agreed, I would also like to see a 5G only option. I guess that would need to force SA. Overall it’s a bit confusion😁

@lasselusse actually the whole setup is a bit confusing. Teltonika told me to try setting the connection to 4G only then set it to 5G mixed with mode as SA. So perhaps a 5G only which is listed as SA, I mean since NSA includes 4G, would make sense. Overall consusing ;)
